1 Primero de Mayo ** --Mexican national holiday, equivalent to U.S. Labor Day.
1-10 Regional Fruit, Vegetable and Salsa Fair +*-- Rosario, Sinaloa, 12 miles from the ocean and 39 miles from Mazatlan, this town produces some of the best known hot sauces in México and it’s place to one of the widest varieties of produce grown in the country. To celebrate its bounty the town puts on a fair where it displays its regional food and locally made salsas.
3 Día de la Santa Cruz (Day of the Holy Cross)+ --Religious holiday with festivities held in many parts of the country. Construction workers place a decorated cross on buildings under construction.
5 Cinco de Mayo** --National holiday honoring México’s victory of the Batalla de Puebla over the invading French army in 1862.
10 Día de la Madre --(Mother’s Day)* Especially significant national holiday with celebrations commencing at brake of dawn with music and song.
15 Día de San Isidro Labrador (Day of Saint Isidro the Farmer)+ –In towns across the country, farmers have their seeds, water and implements blessed during a fiesta organized before planting begins. In Cuernavaca, farmers from the area of Acapantzingo decorate their mules and oxen with flowers and take them to the church for blessing.
15-31 Feria del Arroz (Rice Festival)+* -- Escárcega, Campeche, a shrimping port and gateway to the Maya Route is also the birth place of authentic Yucatecan food. At the fair one will find a great variety of regional rice dishes and many of them served with shrimp.
20-28 Feria del Queso y el Vino (National Wine and Cheese Fair)+* --In Tequisquiapan, Queretaro, the increasing popularity of this fair has generated appreciation for México’s wine and the honored tradition of cheese making in the area.
22-30 Feria de la Piña (Pineapple Festival)+* -- This fair takes place in Loma Bonita, Oaxaca, known for its sweet and juicy pineapple and center for processing and worldwide distribution of the fruit. The town is located in an area of lush tropical vegetation, 20 miles from Cosamaloapan, Veracruz. Besides being able to appreciate the large commercial, industrial and agricultural exhibits, the fair is a great setting for enjoying and learning about the food and artesania of Oaxaca and Veracruz.
